King in the North....Channel

Welcome to the first entry in the monthly Pinnacle Angling article, covering all things Sea Fishing. There is so much that goes into a normal session, that most of us don't even realise, unless we take a step back and really think about it. Target species, baits of choice, wind direction, weather, state of tide and time of the year, all play a part in whether a Sea Fishing session can be successful, or not. However, one thing you can always count on, is the people that put in the most time, effort and miles, are usually the ones that have the best results in match angling and specimen hunting.

Chris "Bugsy" Read, is one of those aforementioned people.

Being a multiple time International Angler, and representing Wales to a 2nd place finish at the 2012 World cup in Holland, missing out on Gold by only 1 point.

Chris, has been all over the world, fishing from Cape Town to Cardiff Foreshore and the knowledge he has gained is second to none.

The Bristol Channel in January / February can be a baron land, unless you get on the rough stuff and are prepared to lose a few leads.

Burry Port, (North Channel), is one of the clean ground venues that fishes really well in the tough winter months, throwing up great Dab and Whiting fishing. This makes it an ideal place for a pleasure session, to bag up on whiting for the freezer or a Sea Fishing match.

Chris recently fished the first event of the South Wales Sea Anglers calendar, and took the win out of 34 people, with an impressive 3 meters of fish in a measure and release, low water match.

With the conditions being bright and the water being clear, Chris decided to fish a light and delicate continental style with 4lb main line to cut through the water, coupled with tapered shock leaders. The rig of choice on the day, were hook flappers made up with 30lb rig body, 12lb fluorocarbon hook lengths and size #4 Pinnacle Angling Scratchers hooks.

Baits varied with the Dabs, enjoying worm baits and the Whiting taking both fish and worm baits. The bait size is also important, making sure not to out bait the size of fish you're targeting.

Burry Port isn't just a great place to fish matches in the winter, its a fantastic venue to fish in the Spring and Summer for Smooth Hounds, Thornback ray, Bass and even Tope.

If you access the beach at the old pier, you will need to wait for the water to recede enough to safely get on to the beach, with waders being recommended to cross.

When you cross the water on to the sand to the right on the above picture, walk to the right and you will see some spikes that are sticking out of the sand. Once you pass them, you can fish wherever you want to get into the amazing bounty that Burry Port, North Channel has to offer.

I hope you guys have enjoyed my first article on the Pinnacle Angling website, and I encourage you to to leave some feedback in the comments section with what you would like to see in the future. I have plenty planned with some amazing anglers, giving up plenty of their tips, tricks and information to try and help everyone catch more fish and improve their Sea Fishing experience.

Thank you for stopping by.....

4lb mainline, is that typo?

Nope. When fishing over sand for dabs and whiting 4lb mainline is plenty. You have leader to take the casting strain. Cuts through the tide and the fish are no bigger than 1lb.
